Diamond wheels

It is the more important one and the most sophisticated tool.

 

A diamond wheel has 3 main parts:

-The fasten system on the spindle or a cone

-The wheel body

-The diamond wheel active part

On this diamond wheel drawing you can see the 3 parts:

-White : the hole allowing to fasten the wheel on the glass processing machine

-Grey : the wheel body

-Black : the diamond active part

 

There are 2 mains diamond wheels type:

-The peripheral wheels ( like on the drawing ). The shape of the diamond wheel gives the shape for the edge on the glass.

These wheels are used to edge, to engrave…

-The cup wheels

These diamond wheels are flat.

They are used to edge ( but for only one shape, flat edge with arises), to bevel..

Differences between peripheral wheels and cup wheels in glass and stone processing
The peripheral wheels

The main advantage for this wheels is that you can obtain all kind of profiles, because the wheel throat shape define the edge shape during processing

For exemple on the drawing it is easy to understand the shape you can obtain on glass or stone ( pencil edge)using this wheel.

The same for this other tool.

 

The second advantage is the speed.

With peripheral wheels you can process on glass or stone on average 20%faster than with cup wheels.

 

The disadvantages:

Firstly the cost, because you have to buy a set of wheels for every edge shape and for every glass or stone thickness. 

For exemple to process on granite 3 cm you need minimum ( diamond and polishing) six different wheels.
Secondly a productivity losing. The time need to install the set of wheels on the machines and to adjust i.

The dressing : the wearing is not the same on all the active part of the wheels. So after a certain time the wheel lose its original shape and you have to dress or very often to send to the supplier to dress  the wheel. So you have a cost and you must also to have an other set of wheels to be able to work when the wheels are sent to the supplier for this operation.

The quality: The quality is good but not perfect because you can see lines on the edge

Different kind of wheels

To process a glass some different wheels have to be used successively. What are these wheels?

1/The diamond wheels

It is the only tool able to remove material ( glass). We use it toa/Remove the cutting capability for the glass just cut ( on the sides) ( To prevent accidents)

b/Reach the final required dimensions for the glass

Some diamond tools. as you can see there are a lot with differences we are going to explain after.

2/The polishing wheels

Here we are looking for decorative effect. These wheels are not able to remove any material ( glass) . There are used to remove the lines done on the glass by the diamond and to polish the glass

 

3/The stone wheels

They are used when you need to remove small quantities of glass and to polish in the same time.They try to do the job for 2 wheels, one diamond and one polishing.

But they are also used only for polishing.

4/White wheels or cerium oxyde wheels

These wheels are only used to shine the glass. No glass removal
5/The felts

For some very specific applications ( mainly the bevel) the traditionnal polishing wheels are not able to polish perfectly the glass. In this case a felt with an addition of cerium oxyde liquid is required.

 

6/Others specifics tools

The milling cutter or the disc to cut the glass.

With this blog we want to describe and explain the wheels and the tools used in flat glass and stone processing.

Why to mix these 2 materials? Because the wheels and the tools are often very similar

The blog will speak first about the glass and at the end about the stone, marble and granite to explain the differences with the tools for the glassWe will build the scheme as we will go on inside explanations

A/The cutting table
Before to be processed, the glass must be cut with dimensions near to the final ones. This first operation is done on a machine called cutting table. It is an horizontal table covered with a felt to make easier the glass moving

A cutting table is the basic machine for all glazier companies ( manual or fully automatic).

The tools used to cut the glass is a small wheels ( few millimeters diameter).

Not a lot to tell about this tool. There are different kinds and different using ( working angle) depending the glass thickness.

 

B/The edging machine
Other very popular machine in glazier companies.

This machine is used to edge the glass with a lot of different wheels

C/The bevelling machine

This machine looks like an edging machine, but the work is very different and precise. This machine use special wheels

 

D/CNC machines

In only few years ( these machines entered in the glass industry only 17 years ago) these machines have become the most important users for wheels. Due to the fact there are more and more popular in glazier shops, and also that they can carry out a lot of different jobs.

E/Double edgers

These machines are able to edge in only one time the 4 sides of a rectangular glass. Big wheels consumers. But these machines ( very often working 24 hours a day) are not very frequent.

F/Drilling machine

The essential machine for all glazier. But she do only one thing :………………………………To drill holes in glass.

G/Engraving machine

Here we are going to work on the surface of the glass to create geometric or artistic drawing. There are only few such machines.
